We evaluated records of patients who were referred to the Uveitis clinic of a tertiary care hospital in North India by non-uveitis experts between June 2011 and September 2014, but who did not have uveitis. A total of 2460 new patients were seen in the Uveitis clinic during this period, 122(4.96%) of whom were erroneously labelled to have some form of uveitis. Amongst paediatric patients(less than 18 years, 15 patients ie 12.3%), the most common mis-diagnosis was trauma(26.7%) followed by chronic rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (20%) and pigment dispersion syndrome(13.3%). Amongst adults, the most common mis-diagnosis was chronic rhegmatogenous retinal detachment(14%) followed by trauma(12.2%), pigment dispersion syndrome (5.6%) and pingueculitis(4.7%). It is important to be aware of various disorders that mimic uveitis at different ages,to help reduce unnecessary laboratory, radiological and systemic evaluations and prevent overtreatment of such patients.
