Purpose: To study the demographic and clinical profile of dry eye patients and their management
Material and methods: Retrospective chart review of severe dry eye patients presented to cornea clinic from January 2013 to December 2017.
Results: A total of 36 severe dry eyes patients of age group 5-80 years (mean age: 43.31) were evaluated. The mean values for Schirmer’s II a, Tear film break up time (TBUT), Tear meniscus height (TMH) were found to be 3.4±1.1mm, 2±2.6 seconds and 0.5±0.2mm respectively. The cause of dry eyes in majority of patients was found to be idiopathic (52.7%), whereas a specific etiology could be illustrated in 17 (47.3%) patients. Meibomian gland disease was found to be the cause in 7 (19.4%), Steven Johnson syndrome in 4(11.1%), Rheumatoid arthritis in 3(8.3%), Sjogren’s in 2 (5.5%), hypothyroidism in 1(2.7%) patients. Conclusion: Majority of dry eye patients can be managed conservatively. The role of punctal plugs in severe dry eye is recommended.
