Purpose – to evaluate myopia as risk factors in patients being diagnosed as primary open angle glaucoma (POAG)
Materials and methods – 60 patients attending eye OPD in one year and being diagnosed as POAG were included in this study. Detailed history and thorough ocular examinations including visual acuity, refraction, tonometry, ophthalmoscopy, slit lamp biomicroscopy, gonioscopy, perimetry, specular microscopy and ocular coherence tomography(OCT) were done.
Results – 120 eyes of 60 patients were examined. 50% of the patients were found to be myopic. Most of the them were either mild or moderate myopics. Majority of the cases(46 eyes) were mild myopic (upto -3D)
Conclusion –Myopia was found to be a risk factor for development of glaucoma with significant association. This study emphasizes that the ‘opportunistic screening’ of myopic population will help in early diagnosis and treatment of POAG.
