Aim:To study correlation between optical coherence tomography(OCT) patterns of diabetic macular edema(DME) with systemic factors. Methods:Retrospective observational study with 448 eyes of 224 patients of type 2 Diabetes Mellitus with Diabetic retinopathy and DME. Diffuse retinal thickening, cystoid macular edema(CME),neurosensory detachment, posterior hyaloid traction(PHT) and tractional retinal detachment(TRD) were correlated with various systemic factors. Results:Mean Diastolic blood pressure was significantly higher in CME group(p=0.0001). PHT and TRD groups combined had significantly higher mean triglyceride levels(p=0.0001) and mean fasting blood sugar levels(p=0.0014). No correlation was found between any other factors like systolic blood pressure, urea, creatinine, cholesterol, VLDL, LDL, HDL, serum homocysteine and urine micro albumin levels. Conclusion:Patterns of DME can act as window to understand systemic status for better and comprehensive approach to patient management.
