12 of the 800 patients, who underwent Phacoemulsification at our centre, and had a Posterior Capsular(PC) Rent & Vitreous Disturbance, were retrospectively selected in the study.
All the patients underwent Phacoemulsification by the stop and chop technique. None of the patients were started on any topical NSAID’s or steroids postoperatively. 9 of the 12 cases had a PCIOL implanted in the sulcus and the other 3 underwent Iris Claw fixated implantation at 6 weeks. All patients underwent OCT at 1 month.
3 of the 12 patients (25%) who had a PC Rent with Vitreous Disturbance had developed OCT proven CME at 1 month.
2 of these 3 (67%) were the ones who were left aphakic at the time of primary surgery, indicating larger rents with massive vitreous loss was a stronger risk factor for CME.
PC Rent with Vitreous Disturbance is a major risk factor for the development of Post operative CME and OCT is an accurate tool in the detection of the same.
