Summers in India are known for the sudden sandstorms. People who do not use protective eye wear like prescription glasses or sunglasses, can get foreign bodies on their cornea and their vision can be permanently damaged. 5 patients presented to us the day after a sandstorm with red eyes, photophobia, itching, pain, watering and diminution of vision. One of them had widespread corneal erosions, more in the right eye, while the others had an insect wing, cow dung and a metallic foreign body each. They responded well to treatment, though two had a permanent corneal opacity, which was paracentral, hence did not affect the vision. Ophthalmologists should advise all patients and attendants to wear sunglasses/ protective eye wear outdoors, especially during the summer season, as it could be sight-threatening not to do so. Ophthalmologists and their families should wear them too. (Slit lamp pictures of patients will be shown.)
