Dr.Nidhi Paharia Agarwal, N19233

Method: In this prospective study 30 healthy controls & 30 patients suffering from hypothyroidism were chosen.

They were assessed for palpebral fissure height (PFH), proptosis, OSDI, Schirmer’s tear test, tear break up time (TBUT) & conjunctival impression cytology. The results were then compared between the two groups.

Result: The mean of PFH & proptosis does not show any significant difference between two groups.

Mean OSDI score in controls was (29.2 +/- 6.8) & it was (41.1 +/- 16) in hypothyroids. Mean schirmer test score was (17.5 +/-7.3) & (13.3 +/- 4.4) & mean TBUT was 11.1 +/- 2.3 sec & 6.3 +/- 2.4 sec in controls & hypothyrids respectively.

Hypothyroids showed significant Ocular Surface damage in which 70% had grade 2-3 sqamous metaplasia in temporal interpalpebral conjunctiva, which is in contrast to 26.6% of controls.

Conclusion: Ocular surface damage & dry eyes findings in patients with Hypothyroids were most likely associated with the ocular surface inflammation.
