Aim: To report the refractive changes after IOL implantation in pediatric patients.
We did 5 years retrospective review in patients of 1-8 years age who has undergone cataract surgery with primary IOL placement. Patients were divided in 4 groups i.e. group A 1-2years, group B >2-4 years, group C >4-6 years group D >6-8 years. We included 126 eyes of 96 children. Patients were followed for a minimum of 2 years postoperatively. Refraction was done at 1 month, 3 month, 6 month, 1 & 2 year follow up.
Results: ANOVA test used to evaluate the change in refractive error. We calculated SE in each patient. Patients showed a mean myopic shift of -4.48± 0.26D in gr A, -3.26±38D in gr B, -1.86±43D in gr C, -0.78±18D in gr D. There was no significant difference between the pseudophakic eyes and the fellow eyes in each age group using paired t tests.
Discussion: Our results support our practice of under correcting young children at the time of surgery, targeting for a hyperopic correction.
