Purpose: To enumerate the etiology, clinical features and management of patients with posterior scleritis.
Methods: Retrospective study of 20 cases of posterior scleritis attending the uveitis clinic at a south Indian tertiary care centre in a one year period. Data included medical history, clinical, laboratory and B-scan findings, therapies and outcomes.
Results: The mean age of patients was 44±12.2 years, the majority being female (70%). Unilateral involvement was more common (80%). The main symptom was pain (95%); less than half (45%) the patients cited defective vision. Anterior scleritis was seen in 30% cases. B-mode USG showed serous retinal detachment and subtenon fluid in more than half (55%) the cases. Tuberculous and viral etiologies were clinically evident in 3(15%) and 2(10%) of the cases respectively.
Conclusions: The incidence of infectious posterior scleritis in this study is higher than previously reported.
