Aim:To evaluate effect of amblyopia on visual functions and VEP response. Methods: 22 eyes of 21 cases (age 4-10 yrs).Exclusion criteria: organic ocular diseases, previously treated amblyopia , neurological disorder. Cases were divided as (logMAR) mild (<0.3) moderate (0.3-0.6)severe (> 0.6) amblyopia .Visual functions like distant and near visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, binocularity, steriopsis, accommodation fixation & VEP recorded on first visit after giving best corrected glasses & before patching. Results: Mean age 7.48 yrs; 10 males 11 females ;statistically significant (p<0.01) association of grade of amblyopia with near vision ,steriopsis, binocularity, contrast sensitivity.Accommodation was not found to be affected by amblyopia . VEP amplitude was reduced in amblyopic eye but not related to P100 latency. Conclusion : Visual functions and VEP can be used as parameter to asses response to amblyopia therapy. VEP amplitude can help in diagnosing amblyopia in preverbal children.
