Association of diabetes mellitus with Mac2A is known and both manifest with neuronal degeneration in varying severity. We retrospectively analysed stages(Gass and Blodi staging) and OCT features of Mac2A in 176 eyes of 92 patients and compared between diabetics and non-diabetics. The 2 groups were comparable in age and sex proportion with 116 eyes in diabetic group and 60 in non-diabetic group.
There was no statistical significant difference in BCVA among the groups (p=0.117). Cases with diabetes have 5 times more likelihood of having stage 3 Mac2A (odds: 5.83, p=0.004) and 4 times more likelihood of having stage 4 Mac2A (odds: 4.88, p=0.004) compared to non-diabetics. OCT features of inner and outer foveal defects were relatively same between the groups (p=0.206). This analysis shows more likelihood of having advanced non-proliferative Mac2A (stage 3&4) in diabetics compared to non-diabetics.
