PURPOSE:To describe 5 rare cases of ocular tuberculosis
METHOD:Case report
RESULTS:We describe 5 rare cases of ocular tuberculosis who presented with phlycten at the limbus(n=5) and lupus vulgaris(n=3) in periorbital area.Detailed ocular and systemic examinations were carried out.Biopsy of lupus vulgaris showed epithelioid cells, giant cells.Phlycten scraping showed lymphocytes, monocytes, langerhans cells histologically. All were found to be montoux positive.Chest x ray showed signs of tuberculosis. They were managed with low potent steroids and lubricants.Ocular lesions disappeared within 3 weeks of ATT initiation.
CONCLUSION:Diagnosis of ocular TB remains a challenge.New testing methodologies are promising, utility of these has yet to be established and thus research on their application to ocular TB is also warranted. Finally in cases in which uncertainty about TB remains, biopsy of the lesion for culture,histology,and/or NAA testing may be useful to establish the diagnosis of ocular TB.
