MATERIALS AND METHODS:
In a prospective study done at a tertiary hospital, 200 patients with senile cataract upto grade 3 nuclear sclerosis who underwent manual SICS were subjected to preoperative and postoperative evaluation of macular thickness using OCT. Patients with preexisting retinal pathologies and other intraocular diseases were excluded. Post operatively OCT was done at day 3, day 7, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months.
RESULTS:
Mean central foveal thickness (MCFT) in micron was calculated. MCFT gradually increased from preoperative value till 1 month. After that MCFT decreased and came near preoperative value at 6 months. During postoperative period highest MCFT was noted at 1 month. Clinically significant macular oedema was not found at any point of time in any patient during this study.
CONCLUSION:
So we should be more cautious to undertake SICS in those patients who are at risk of developing cystoid macular oedema or who have higher macular thickness as in diabetic patients.
