Aim:To establish whether infective hepatitis poses a risk for aqueous flare and uveitis and its correlation with disease severity
Method:Observational case control study where 60 known cases of hepatitis B and C who attented ophthalmology and hepatology OPD were screened through slip lamp examination along with 60 age and sex matched controls.Aquous flare was graded and correlated with disease severity.Hazard ratio was calculated
Results:Patients with co-infection of hepatitis B & C had highest incidence of aqueous flare(HR-2.6), followed by patients with HCV only(HR-1.6)
Conclusion:Due to immune system activation in one organ, the inflammatory cells plus cytokines can enter the eyes hematogenously and cause inflammation.Risk of uveitis was 1.30-fold in comparison with that of the controls. In patients with HCV/HBV infection, the uveitis should be screened for, so that timely evaluation & treatment can be possible & subsequent ocular morbity can be avoided.
