AIMS : Pterygium induces corneal flattening and astigmatism, in turn affecting keratometry and thus, IOL power. Effects of pterygium excision on IOL power have not been documented in the Indian population.
METHODS : 50 consecutive patients (n=50) with primary pterygium underwent Pterygium Excision with Conjunctival Autograft over one year. Intraocular lens power and corneal topography was recorded pre-operatively and on day 5 & day 28 post-operatively using IOL Master and corneal topographer respectively.
RESULTS: A statistically significant reduction in IOL powers and corneal astigmatism was found in the post-operative group.
CONCLUSION: Pterygium excision leads to steepening of the cornea, higher K-values and lower IOL power, implying that pterygium surgery must precede cataract surgery to avoid refractive surprise.
