AIM:To retrospectively study KOH&fungal culture(FC) results in suspected fungal ulcer.MATERIALS &METHODS:Record of results of KOH &FC&fungal species sent in 1yr were reviewed.RESULTS:150 suspected fungal ulcer were analysed.KOH positive in 24,negative in 63 & not done in 63. FC was positive in 66,no growth in 83.Results were positive for both KOH&FC in 17&culture positive in 27 in which KOH was not done.KOHpositive & culture negative seen in 7 where as KOHnegative & culture positive seen in 21.Both results were negative in 40.Fungal growth analysed for the type of species,Acremonium(3) ;Asp.flavus(7);
Asp.fumigatius(12,contaminants were 4);Asp.niger(7,contaminants 1);Cephalosporium(contaminant);
cladosporium(1);Curvularia(1);Fusarium(25);Geotriutum(1);Mucor(1);Nonalbican candida(1);Seidosporium(2)
CONCULSION:Fusarium was common species causing fungal ulcer.Even if KOH is negative FC can be positive,also if both are negative high clinical suspect cases do respond to fungal treatment.
