Purpose:Understand awareness, prevalence, and risk factors of DR in Mumbai urban slums. Methods:Population-based study conducted in urban slums, 6562 subjects screened for T2DM, (n=608) underwent ophthalmic evaluation, anthropometry, dilated stereo-photography for retinal evaluation. DR graded as per modified ETDRS criteria. Multivariate logistic regression model assessed associations of risk. Results:More than half of study participants never heard of DM before study & more than 60% of illiterate subjects were not aware that DM affects eye. Prevalence of DR was 1.56% in general population & 18.7% in known diabetes and 6.32% in newly diagnosed diabetes. DR was positively associated with male gender (p=0.001) & higher duration of DM (p<0.001), no association appreciated with BMI (p=0.795). Conclusion:One out of every five DM subjects in slums has DR with trending risk factors similar to urban lifestyle. Increasing awareness and eye-care services may reduce the prevalence in the slums.
