Purpose: To study the visual outcomes & complications of cataract surgery in eyes with lens coloboma.
Methods: Retrospective study of 56 patients (66 eyes) diagnosed with lens coloboma subjected to cataract surgery between January 2001 to December 2015. Eyes which had undergone any previous surgery or had undergone combined surgery of any kind were excluded.
Result: Mean age 42.9(± 10) years. 49 males. Median follow up 19.5 (IQR 1.6 to 71.14) months. Visual acuity (VA) improvement in 59 (89.4%); pre-op LogMAR BCVA 1.4± 0.7, post-op 0.8 ± 0.7(p<0.001). Retinochoroidal coloboma in 63(95.4%). 24(33.3%) improved to VA ≥ 6/12. 40 eyes (60%) were pseudophakic. Complications included zonular dialysis 29(43.9%), PC rent 11(16.7%), vitreous loss 10(15%), endophthalmitis 1(1.5%), persistent vitreous haemorrhage 1(1.5%). Failure (VA ≤ pre-op VA) occurred in 7(10.61%). Significant risk factor for failure could not be identified. Conclusion: Significant visual improvement occurred in the majority.
