Purpose- one year cross sectional study of the effect of hair dye containing paraphenylenediamene and other aromatic amines on human eyes. Materials and methods: 42 patients with h/o hair dye usage were enquired for the detailed history of the use of hair dye (name of dye, its active ingredients, duration of use, periodicity of use, amount of dye used, any side effect or any allergic manifestation) and underwent detailed ophthalmic examination. Result- most common presentation was ocular irritation (80% ). Posterior blepharitis was found in 18 patients(42%), allergic conjunctivitis in 14 (33%), periocular dermatitis in 8 (19%), corneal epithelial defects in 1 (2%) and angioneurotic edema in 1 (2%). Mean age group was 35-50 yrs with M:F::1:1.6. Conclusion-Hair dye is potentially toxic to ocular structures leading to posterior blepharitis , allergic conjunctivitis, periocular dermatitis, corneal erosions and angioneurotic edema in decreasing frequency affecting middle aged.
