Aim:To compare surgical outcome in phacoemulsification cataract surgery of harder nucleus densities using ultrasound(US) and torsional mode.
Methods:200 eyes of 140 patients-100 in US and 100 in torsional group.Surgeries done by vertical chopping making as many multiple smaller fragments as possible before emulsification in the endocapsular plane.Outcome measures were ultrasound time,CDE,intraoperative complication, post operative day1 corneal edema and vision, final BCVA and endothelial cell by specular microscopy.
Results:There were differences in all outcome measures but none were statistically significant.PCR occured in 3% and 1% in the US and torsional group respectively.
Conclusion:Both methods were effective and safe.Torsional method is more comfortable as it reduces the total surgical time. However,if phacoemulsification is done with correct technique in the endocapsular plane after making multiple smaller fragments, both the methods can yield favourable outcome following surgery.
