Aim- To report severe visual loss and role of diagnostic imaging in a case of optic nerve head avulsion due to blunt ocular trauma.
Introduction- The case reported is a 11-year old male child presenting to the emergency services with chief complaint of sudden loss of vision following blunt trauma to his left eye with iron rod while on the backseat of a motor bike. Fundus examination showed large peripapillary preretinal haemorrhage emanating into the vitreous cavity suggesting optic nerve head avulsion.
Discussion- The mechanism of injury, clinical signs and role of diagnostic imaging in traumatic optic nerve head avulsion has been described.
Conclusion-This case highlights the possibility and mechanism of serious posterior segment injury in eyes with minimal or no anterior segment injuries and the potential for serious ocular trauma, if adequate road safety measures are not adhered.
Key words – optic nerve head avulsion, blunt ocular trauma, peripapillary preretinal haemorrhage.
