AIM: To know percentage, demographic, clinical profile of ocular involvement in thermal facial burns.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Medical records of 60 patients with thermal facial burns during a period of one year were examined retrospectively. Age, sex, mode and place of injury, ocular signs at time of presentation were noted.
RESULTS: A total of 60 patients with 120 eyes were included. 50.8% had ocular involvement in thermal facial burns, 37eyes(30.8%) had adnexal injuries with lid skin burns, 17eyes(14%) had conjunctival and corneal epithelial involvement, 5eyes(4.1%) had stromal involvement. Ocular involvement was more in males(59%) and pediatric age group(26.2%) than females. Burns due to flame or hot liquids occurring in home accidents(50%) was the common mode of injury.
CONCLUSION: Ocular adnexal injuries were common in thermal facial burns. Ocular surface involvement is less common. Home accidents were most common cause. Males and pediatric age group were affected.
