Aim
To evaluate effect of topical medications with both anti-histaminic and mast cell stabilizer actions in mild to moderate allergic conjunctivitis.
Method
Total of 45patients (with 15 in each group) were sequentially allotted in 3 groups (1-Olopatadine0.1%, 2-Bepotastine1.5% or 3-Alcaftadine0.25%). Patients filled a questionnaire grading their symptoms before starting treatment, 15minutes after putting first eyedrop,1day,1week and 1month. Masked investigator graded their signs before starting treatment and 1week and 1month follow-up visits.
Results
Reduction of mean scores from baseline (redness, discharge, watering, photophobia, itching) to 1day, 1week and 1month and percentage of patients with zero or minimal itch at various time points were comparable in three groups, with no statistically significant difference(p>0.05). All medications have minimal effect on regression of palpebral and limbal papillae.
Conclusion
All three topical medications offer comparable symptomatic relief.
