Aim:To compare surgical time, patient signs and symptoms, complications and recurrence following pterygium excision and conjunctival autograft(CAG) with sutures/fibrin glue/autologous serum.
Methods:Prospective RCT of 34 patients with primary nasal pterygium enrolled and divided into 3 groups.12 in Group 1-CAG with sutures,12 in group 2-CAG with fibrin glue and 10 in group 3-CAG with autologous serum.
Results:In group 1, 41.6% complained pain,66.6% foreign body sensation,50% epiphora.Epiphora was the only complaint in other 2 groups with 16.6% in group 2 and 40% in group 3.Inflammation was seen in 33.3% in group 1.Graft dislodgement was found only in group3( 30%) in post operative day1.Recurrence rate was 25% in group1, 8.33% in group2 and 40% in group3.
Conclusion- Conjunctival autograft with glue was found to have low recurrence and complication, less patient discomfort and reduced the surgery time making the procedure comfortable both for the surgeon and the patient.
