Aim – To assess the outcome of high volume high quality cataract surgery at tertiary care hospital in North East India
A retrospective study was done and data was collected from the case files of patients who had undergone cataract surgery as camps cases in tenure of 6 months. Visual outcome was determined by comparing the pre & post-operative visual acuity.
Of the 840 patients operated 507 (60 %) had a visual acuity of ≥ 6/18 post-operatively after the final review.A visual acuity of ≥ 6/9 was obtained in 102 patients after correction. 161 patients failed to turn up for the final review. Post operative corneal oedema was seen in 48 cases, 15 patients had to kept aphakic because of intraoperative complications.The major cause of decreased visual outcome was found to be due to pre-existing retinal conditions & uncorrected refractive errors.
Conclusion –The outcome of cataract surgery in this study is significantly good as per the WHO recommendations.
