As part of the global initiative of VISION 2020 The Right to Sight, we implemented a focused program to deliver the quality eye care services in tribal areas of these two States with the help from the Government and Non-Government eye care Organizations (NGOs).Some of the NGOs who were very enthusiastic in the beginning, later withdrawn from the program because of the logistic difficulties to reach the remote areas. A total of 1303 camps were held in remote tribal areas and about 180000 persons were screened for refractive errors and eye diseases. 92000 pairs of spectacles were given at no cost. Out of the 22373 persons identified with cataract 15161 underwent cataract surgery, 1579 persons identified with other eye ailments referred to appropriate eye care centers. Of 23502 primary school children screened, 356 were provided free spectacles. Some of the NGOs would like to work in their own comfort zone rather than venturing to go to remote areas where the need is.
