Introduction -determining barriers to cataract surgery is critical for planning strategies to prevent blindness.
Aim- To assess and identify barriers for the acceptance of cataract surgery among patients with complications and late presentation.
METHODS – 200 subjects with less than V/A 6/60 in the better eye as a result of cataract were interviewed with
pre -tested questionnaire and complete ophthalmic examination was done.
RESULTS – total barriers per patient ranged from 1 to 15, mean 7.4, SD 2.77.
CONCLUSION – The study area has a high burden of cataract blindness. Non accesibility of services, poverty, lack of awareness and fear seems to be the major barriers. Service expansion and awareness programmes can solve these issues to a greater extent.
