Aim: Aponeurotic ptosis ,though common in the elderly is a rarity in the young. This study aims to evaluate the surgical treatment of aponeurotic ptosis in the young non contact lens wearers..
Methods: Retrospective study of patients with aponeurotic ptosis, 14-50years of age, who underwent surgery between October 2013 and November 2017 was done. All were treated by levator resection under local anesthesia/iv sedation.
Results: 18 eyes of 17 patients were studied. None was using contact lens among the 13 ametropes. 3 had ocular allergy. 3 had been treated for lid chalazia. 8 had severe ptosis. All had good levator function. Postoperatively, 1 had undercorrection and was reoperated with a good outcome. Follow up ranged from 2 weeks to 48 months.
Conclusion: Aponeurotic ptosis in young patients is rare. Review of old photographs often proves helpful in diagnosis. External levator resection appears to offer good cosmetic outcome in this condition.
