VT14 : Sutured secondary SFIOL: An easy to learn, low cost surgical technique”.

To demonstrate the technique of sutured SFIOL undertaken as a method of secondary IOL fixation in a low cost setting by Residents in training. After clearing the visual axis, a 10-0 prolene double armed suture is introduced 1mm posterior to the limbus and caught on the opposite end by a 26G needle inserted at the similar location. Railroading is used to capture the prolene needle and the suture externalised. A corneoscleral entry is made and the suture midpoint is externalised. The rigid SFIOL is fastened to the suture and introduced. The ends are secured subscleral and the main wound closed. Good visual outcome in all cases under the hands of the Residents at our centre. Total of 87 cases undertaken till date with no sight threatening complications. The total cost of consumables is less than 15 USD. Sutured SFIOL is a good long lasting technique for secondary IOL implantation. It gives confidence to the Residents and they are able to perform these surgeries unsupervised.
