TRADITIONAL FUNDUS CAMERAS OFFER GOOD QUALITY IMAGES BUT ARE   BULKY, OFFICE BASED,AND COSTLY

DUE TO TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENTS IN SMARTPHONES AND TELECOMUNICATIONS IN  RECENT  TIMES ,IT HAS BEEN POSSIBLE TO DO FUNDUS  EXAMINATION,CAPTURE / STORE  RETINAL IMAGES AND  TRANSMIST  THESE  IMAGES FOR SEEKING EXPERT OPINION VIA INTERNET FOR SCREENING PROGGRAMES FOR DIABETIC RETINOPATHY AND SECOND OPINION FROM  RETINAL COLLEUGES.

1.A SELFIE STICK AND A CAR MOBILE HOLDER IS USED

2 .FIRST THE MOBILE HOLDING UNIT OF CAR  MOBILE HOLDER IS DISENGAGED FROM THE MAIN BODY OF CAR  MOBILE HOLDER BY UNSCREWING IT

  1. THEN THE MOBILE HOLDING UNIT OF THE SELFIE STICK IS DISENGAGED FROM MAIN BODY OF SELFIE STICK BY UNSCREWING  IT

4.A GROOVE IS MADE IN THE MOBILE HOLDING UNIT OF SELFIE STICK WITH THE HACKSAW BLADE

5.THE MAIN BODY OF CAR MOBILE HOLDER IS THEN ENGAGED IN THE GROOVE  MADE IN MOBILE HOLDING UNIT OF SELFIE STICK AND  THIS JOINT  IS STRENGTHEND  BY  FASTENING IT  WITH A ELECTRIC INSULATION TAPE USED DAY TO DAY BY ELECTRICIANS

6.THE DEVICE IS READY TO USE NOW

7.THE MOBILE PHONE IS FIRMLY ATTACHED  TO ONE END OF THIS DEVICE BY  SUCTION MECHANISM  OF THE CAR MOBILE  HOLDER

  1. A  T SPANNER  USED BY  TWO WHEELER MECHANICS  SIZE 10 /11 AND A  z14+15 NUMBER ORDINARY SPANNER IS  BOUGHT FROM THE HARDWARE STORE
  2. THE T SPANNER IS ENGAGED AT 90 DEGREES WITH THE ORDINARY SPANNER BY A NORMAL INSULATING ELECTRICAL TAPE
  3. THE SLIT LAMP MOUNT IS READY TO USE   AFTER  ENGAGING THE OTHER END OF ORDINARY SPANNER   TO  MAIN BODY OF CAR MOBILE HOLDER WITH  INSULATING ELECTRIC TAPE AT 90 DEGREES

INSTRUCTIONS FOR  USE  OF THIS DO IT YOURSELF  FUNDUS CAMERA

  1. FIRST  DOWNLOAD  THE MOBILE  APP  “ULLMAN INDIRECT “ FROM THE APP STORE
  • THIS  APP  IS  VERY USEFULL  IN CONTROLLING ILLUMINATION AND EXPOSURE  DURING IMAGE        …CAPTURE
  • IT ALSO ENABLES TO KEEP THE LIGHT “CONTINOUSLY  ON”  DURING  CAPTURE OF  RETINAL  IMAGES
  • AND   IT   ALSO  HAS FEATURE FOR ROTATING THE CAPTURED IMAGES  LATERALY AND VERTICALY  TO GIVE THE RIGHT ORIENTATION OF CAPTURED RETINAL IMAGES

2.IT IS POSSIBLE TO TO INDIRECT OPHTHALMOSCOPY WITH THIS DEVICE  BY HOLDING THIS DEVICE IN HAND WITH THE 20 D LENS  DIRECTED TOWARDS THE EYE AND THE A TWO DIMENSIONAL IMAGE OF  RETINA  IS  VIEWED ON  THE  SCREEN OF MOBILE PHONE

3  .FOR  PHOTOGRAPHY OF  CENTRAL RETINA  ,THE DEVICE IS FIRST MOUNTED ON THE   SLIT LAMP AND THE PATIENT IS ASKED TO REST HIS CHIN AND  FOREHEAD ON THE SLIT LAMP

THEN AS WE PERFORM 90 D EXAMINATION  , THE  20 D/28 D LENS IS CENTERED ON THE PUPIL CLOSE TO THE EXAMINING EYE  AND GRADUALLY  BROUGHT AWAY FROM THE PATIENTS EYE TILL A PERFECTLY FOCUSED IMAGE IS SEEN ON THE  SCREEN OF MOBILE PHONE IN THE “ULLMAN INDIRECT  PHOTOGRAPHY APP”

THE IMAGES CAN BE EDITED  IN ADOBE PHOTOSHOP APP FOR  PREPARING  TEXTBOOK LIKE CIRCULAR  IMAGE,MAKING A COLLAGE OF PICTURES AND ADDING TEXT

IMAGES OF PERIPHERAL RETINA  CAN BE CAPTURED BY  EXAMINING THE PATIENT IN RECLINING  POSITION IN CHAIR UNIT  AND  SHOOTING THE IMAGES IN VIDEO/PHOTOBURST MODE OF ULLMAN INDIRECT APP

DISCUSSION

 

USING THIS  DO IT YOURSELF SMARTPHONE BASED FUNDUS CAMERA DEVICE IT WAS POSSIBLE TO

1.PERFORM INDIRECT OPHTHALMOSCOPY WITH A TWO DIMENSIONAL IMAGE VIEWED ON THE SCREEN OF SMARTPHONE

2.PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE CENTRAL AND PERIPHERAL RETINA WERE CAPTURED IN PHOTOBURST MODE OF ULLMAN INDIRECT APP BY APPLYING THE BASIC PRINCIPLES OF PHOTOGRAPHY I.E

1.ADEQUETE  ILLUMINATION AND  EXPOSURE WAS ACHIEVED WITH THE ULLMAN INDIRECT APP FOR RETINAL PHOTOGRAPHY

2.STABILITY DURING IMAGE CAPTURE WAS ACHIVED BY   ASKING THE PATIENT TO REST HIS FOREHEAD AND CHIN ON SLIT LAMP AND  FINE FOCUSING WITH THE JOYSTICK OF THE SLIT LAMP AVOIDING MOVEMENT BLUR AND SHAKY IMAGES

3.TRANSFER OF PHOTOS TO  OTHER DOCTORS VIA INTERNET.
