PURPOSE:To present a case of neonatal endophthalmitis
METHOD:A 45 day old term infant admitted for suspected neonatal sepsis was referred for ophthalmic evaluation with uneventful natal history and hospital course until day 15 when decreased activity and feeding was observed. Ophthalmic evaluation and RetCam imaging was done.
RESULTS: On examination, anterior segment showed posterior synechiae with circumcorneal congestion.IOP was normal.Posterior segment showed vitreous haze with hemorrhagic exudates on both retinal surfaces and no view of the disc.A diagnosis of bilateral neonatal endophthalmitis was made and infant was taken up for bilateral vitrectomy with intravitreal antibiotics. Blood culture showed citrobacter sensitive to cephalosporins. Operative course was uneventful and postoperatively infant was better.
CONCLUSION:Endophthalmitis is a grave sight threatening complication of neonatal sepsis requiring prompt intervention by an ophthalmologist to improve the outcome.
