Background: Fluorescein stain is routinely used in applanation tonometry for measurement of IOP. Author tried to study, in case of emergency if stain is not available, whether IOP reading still reliable or not?
Aim: To study difference in IOP measurement with and without Fluorescein stain.Method:100 eyes of 50 patients above 18 years of age were studied.
Exclusion-Subjects with any corneal pathology which may affect mires formation. IOP was measured first without staining and then with staining with Fluorescein stain.
Observations:Mean IOP without use of stain was 13.48+/ -3.59mmHg, while when measured after staining it was 15.34+/-3.50mmHg and this difference is statistically significant. But at the same time, it
was observed that difference is consistent with underestimation by approx. 2mmHg.
Conclusions: Fluorescein stain must be used routinely for applanation tonometry. But, in case of emergency if stain is not available, corrected value still stands as viable estimation of IOP.
