A case of a young 21 year old female, who is a known case of Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus, diagnosed a year ago. She presented with gradual progressive diminution of vision in both eyes. She was diagnosed to have diabetic retinopathy. Within 6 months of presentation, diabetic retinopathy progressed rapidly and she developed tractional retinal detachment in both eyes.
Conclusion: Management of diabetic retinopathy in cases of Type 1 DM is difficult due to the rapid progression of the disease. In spite of regular follow ups and control of blood glucose levels, it may be difficult to control the progression of diabetic retinopathy in young Type 1 DM patients. It is necessary to diagnose the disease early and regular retinal evaluation prior to the development of diabetic retinopathy.
