Background: The aim was to evaluate the effect of HD on various ocular parameters in diabetic and non diabetic end stage renal disease (ESRD) patients.
Methods: We had studied 156 eyes of 78 ESRD patients, who were undergoing HD in our tertiary centre. Patients were divided in 2 groups as per diabetic status. Visual acuity (VA) was recorded with log MAR chart, intraocular pressure (IOP), central corneal thickness (CCT) with ultrasound pachymetry, central macular thickness (CMT) with OCT, ocular perfusion pressure (OPP) was derived from mean arterial pressure. Ocular parameters were studied one hour pre and post HD session.
Results: VA and OPP was decreased in both groups (p<0.001). Additionally IOP, CCT, corrected IOP was decreased in diabetics (p<0.001). However, in non diabetics only CMT was decreased (p<0.001). Conclusions: HD affects ocular parameters in all ESRD patients irrespective of the diabetic status.
