The posterior segment of the eye has been investigated in the pathogenesis of amblyopia, but no abnormalities have yet been reported consistently. In this prospective study, treatment naïve amblyopes aged 6 years – 12 years with best corrected visual acuity in the amblyopic eye between log Mar 0.3 and 0.7 and 0.1 or better in the contralateral eye were recruited. All patients underwent Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) imaging of the retina and choroid. The mean age of the patients were 10.26 ± 1.31 years. There was a significant difference in the vessel density of the choroid between the amblyopic and the fellow eye (p=0.005). However, there was no difference in the superficial and deep capillary vessel density (p=0.733) as well as the area of the foveal avascular zone between the two eyes (p=0.958). The pathogenesis of amblyopia may involve the choroid- the primary source of blood supply for the photoreceptors.
