Aim: To compare the mydriatic efficacy for ROP screening and systemic side effects of Topical Tropicamide(0.4%) plus Phenylephrine(2.5%) versus topical Tropicamide(1%) alone
Method: Prospective randomized comparative study of 48neonates for ROP screening who were randomly assigned to Group1(Tropicamide 0.4%+ phenylephrine2.5%) or Group2 (Tropicamide 1%). Pupillary diameter, oxygen saturation, heart rate and respiratory rate were measured-Predilatation,15, 30& 45mins after drop instillation
Results: The two groups were well matched for age and other baseline parameters. The mydriatic effect in Group 1 was significantly superior to that of group 2(p<0.001). There was no significant difference between the 2 groups in systemic parameters at 30 (p=0.75, 0.15 &0.41) &45mins (p=0.41, 0,71 &0.09) respectively
Conclusion: A combination of Tropicamide0.4% +phenylephrine 2.5% is very effective in achieving sufficient mydriasis for ROP screening without systemic side effects in preterm infants
