Dr.Lavi Mangla, L20907

A cross-sectional study of thirty patients with chronic dacryocystitis in which samples were collected from conjunctiva and inferior meatus preoperatively while from lacrimal sac intraoperatively and then sent for microbial analysis. Total 90 samples were evaluated and bacterial growth were detected in 71 samples and a total of 76 isolates were found. Culture positive rates were 73.33% in conjunctiva, 83.33% in inferior meatus and 80.00% in lacrimal sac. A significant association was found between conjunctiva and lacrimal sac (p=0.013) while between inferior meatus and lacrimal sac association was not significant (p=0.220). Thus, organisms from conjunctiva may have a direct role in infectious etiopathogenesis of chronic dacryocystitis. We have offered alternative sampling site for determining microbiological profile of patients with chronic dacryocystitis and thus prophylactic antibiotic therapy to be given pre-operatively.
