Abstract:
Background: In children less than 9 years of age, single aerobes are the most common cause of orbital cellulitis whereas in older children and adults more complex infections which are difficult to treat are the cause. We present a rare case of culture proven MRSA and M.TB positive orbital cellulitis in immunocompetent 1 year old baby and discuss our management which led to rapid improvement. Such a case of MRSA and M.TB in orbital cellulitis has never been reported.
Conclusion: In TB endemic areas M.TB can coexist with other common organisms which cause orbital cellulitis. Such situation may be common in patients with high TB contact exposure. Treatment with conventional I&D and IV antibiotics is a rational approach as M.TB may unlikely be the cause of such acute presentation in this age group.
Key-words: Orbital cellulitis, MRSA- Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus, M.TB- Mycobacterium tuberculosis, I&D- Incision and Drainage
