Aim: Acute onset unilateral painful loss of vision with good visual recovery characterizes typical optic neuritis. Atypical ON is less common, associated with poorer visual prognosis, associated systemic disease, which mandates aggressive and prolonged therapy. Aim of this study is to describe causes, management and visual outcome of patients with atypical ON
Method: Retrospective case series of 3yrs duration; included 11 optic neuritis patients with atypical features
Results: Study included 3males&8females with mean age 34.1yrs. Causes included ITP 1, Pancytopenia1, NMO2, SLE 1, postpartum1, postviral ON3, Toxic ON1, idiopathic1. Response to Steroid 6/11, steroid dependence in 4/11and immunosuppressives 4/11patients. Visual outcome: Mild loss(6/9-6/18) 5/11, Moderate loss(6/24-6/36) 2/11, severe loss(<6/60 ) 4/11; two patients had bilateral severe vision loss
Conclusion: Atypical ON has poorer visual outcome. Prolonged steroid therapy or immunosuppressive maybe required
