Objective:To study the clinical, etiological profile and outcome of patients with painful ophthalmoplegia.
Methodology:A retrospective observational study involving 27 patients presenting with painful ophthalmoplegia in 2 years was done. From their records, clinical features and the findings of the complete neuro-ophthalmic examination, treatment and outcome in terms of improvement in extraocular movement and visual acuity was noted.
Results:Out of the 27 cases, 74% were due to an inflammatory etiology, 7.4% due to infectious, compressive and vascular causes each, and 3.5% were due to trauma. Marked improvement was seen in 66.67% cases within 2 weeks of starting intravenous steroids and antibiotics. Mild improvement was seen in 11.12% cases whereas 7.40% were lost to follow up and 3.70% showed improvement followed by deterioration.
Conclusion:There is significant improvement with intravenous steroids and antibiotics in painful ophthalmoplegic patients with an inflammatory aetiology.
