FP690 : EFFECT OF ORAL ATENOLOL AND AMLODIPINE ON INTRAOCULAR PRESSURE AND OPHTHALMIC ARTERY BLOOD FLOW

This was a prospective, observational study to evaluate the effects of oral atenolol & amlodipine in patients with newly diagnosed systemic hypertension, (i)on intra ocular pressure(IOP) & (ii)ophthalmic artery blood flow(OAF) measured by transcranial doppler. Newly diagnosed systemic hypertensive patients were divided into 2 groups of 30 patients each. IOP & OAF were measured before & post medication on day1, day 7 and day 30. RESULTS: There was a statistically significant decrease in IOP in both the groups: amlodipine; pre medication IOP-15.13±2.55mmHg & post medication, day1-13.46±2.19,day7-13.13±2.01 & day30-13.06±2.14[p<0.001]; atenolol; pre medication IOP-16.06±2.13mmHg & post medication, day1-12.00±1.74,day7-12.40±1.92& day30-12.46±1.94[p<0.001]. It was observed that atenolol caused greater decrease in OAF during both systole & diastole, whereas amlodipine decreased blood flow mainly during systole.
