Introduction:- To compare the visual outcomes, adverse events and cost of simultaneous bilateral cataract surgery (SBCS) with delayed bilateral cataract surgery (DBCS) in paediatric age group.
Methods:- Retrospective, comparative analysis of SBCS with DBCS in children (age< 14 years) with bilateral developmental cataracts was done. Results:- 23 patients underwent SBCS and 22 DBCS. The groups were comparable in terms of age (p=0.17), sex (p=0.25), economic status (p=0.72) and postoperative refractive error (p=0.92). The mean (SD) absolute interocular difference in refractive error between the 2 treatment groups was 0.47 (±0.76) for the DBCS group and 0.46 (±0.40) for the SBCS group (P = .92). A 21.9% savings in treatment expenses occured for SBCS patient’s. No eye developed endophthalmitis. Time of hospital stay and OT time were significantly less in SBCS. Conclusions:- SBCS has comparable visual outcome with lesser cost and no additional adverse effect.
