Purpose: To find causes of poor visual outcome in uveitic macular edema (UME) even after resolution of ME with treatment.
Methods: 45 eyes of UME from June’16-Apr’17 were prospectively analysed on day of presentation, at 1st and 2nd month for distant visual acuity (DVA) and near vision with reading speed and critical print size (CPS), central macular thickness (CMT), patterns of ME, IS-OS loss, ERM, VMT and SRF on SD-OCT.
Result: CMT at presentation ranged from 0.1 – 0.54 log SD-OCT value. Significant reduction in CMT (<0.1 log value) was noted in 29 eyes after treatment. Among these 29 cases, poor visual outcome in terms of DVA (≤6/36), CPS (≤N18) and reading speed (<75 words/min) were noted in 10 cases. Causes for poor visual outcome were cataract, IS- OS loss, altered RPE and ERM. Conclusion: Reduction in CMT should not be the only criteria to assess visual outcome and prognosis in uveitic macular edema.
