Introduction
Actinomycosis is a rare type of infectious bacterial disease which unlike other infections is able to move gradually and infiltrate body’s tissue causing swelling and inflammation. It is a causative organism for conjunctivitis , blepharitis , canaliculitis and post surgical endophthalmitis.
Case Report
A 34 years old female patient presented to Ophthalmology OPD for defective vision in the left eye and painful nodules over the surface of neck , face and over the left eye. On examination there was dropping of left upper eyelid with lateral dystopia. Fundus revealed oedematous optic disc. There was no perception of light in the left eye. MRI revealed heterogeneously enhancing soft tissue mass in the left orbit compressing the optic nerve.
Conclusion
Actinomycosis occurs worldwide with a likelihood for higher prevalence in area with low socio economic status. Hence its social awareness , early detection and treatment will yield excellent results.
