Dr.Sumita Sethi Gulati, S09823

Many systemic and ocular changes occur during pregnancy; the study was undertaken to measure Central corneal thickness (CCT) in different trimesters of pregnancy and non-gravid women. A total of 200 non-gravid females were included in the control group (group-1) (mean CCT 544.32±34.94 µ); 200 pregnant females were included as cases (group-2) (mean CCT 555.50±39.68 µ); those with co-morbid ocular or systemic conditions were excluded. Quantitative data was analyzed using SPSS and paired t-test. The difference in CCT was statistically significant between group-1 and 2 (p=0.003) and between group-1 and first trimester (n=40) (CCT=569.03±43.65) (P=0.001); the difference was not significant with other trimesters. CCT thus significantly increased in pregnancy; more so in the first trimester. Since CCT can induce variations in IOP, routine screening of CCT during pregnancy should be improvised for early detection as well as management of certain conditions like glaucoma during pregnancy.
