Dr.Seemal, S20349

Aim: to assess the prevalence and spectrum of ocular lesions in patients diagnosed with extrapulmonary tuberculosis (eTb)

Methods: It is a cross sectional, pilot study done over 6 months. The cases were selected from the patients diagnosed in the dept. of Respiratory Medicine. Visual acuity, colour vision, slit-lamp examination of both anterior and posterior segment was done followed by fundus photography.

Results- Of the total 40 eyes in 20 patients examined, 16 eyes (40%) of 10 patients (50%) had lesions consistent with ocular tuberculosis, ranging from non-symptomatic choroidal tubercles to visually debilitating optic disc atrophy.

Conclusions- Ocular lesions are not uncommon in the eTb patients and a comprehensive ophthalmic assessment may prove to be a valuable tool for diagnosis, reduction in morbidity and assessment of therapy related complications.
