Objectives: study to find out the incidence of ROP in preterm neonates, and to find out the association between sepsis and development of ROP in preterm neonates.
Methodology: A prospective cross–sectional study was performed enrolling premature neonates admitted to the NICU and OPD between March 2017 and April 2018, with a gestational age of 34 weeks or less at birth and a birth weight of 1500 g or less. A total of 250 neonates underwent a retinal evaluation by indirect ophthalmoscopy from the fourth postnatal week and followed up according to ROP screening guidelines.
Results: Out of 250 neonates, 48 developed ROP in one or both eyes, 100 were diagnosed with sepsis. Out of 100 neonates who were diagnosed with sepsis, 32 developed ROP. Univariate analysis showed a significant association between sepsis and the occurrence of ROP (p value = 0.000027).
Conclusion: The incidence of ROP in this study was 19.12%; and sepsis was significantly associated with ROP in preterm neonates.
