PURPOSE:To study the association between hypothyroidism and dry eyes as compared to age matched controls.
METHODS:The study was conducted over a period of 14 months. 60 patients with hypothyroidism as cases and 60 age matched controls were enrolled in this study. Ocular surface and tear film integrity were assessed using Schirmer’s test, Tear film break up time and OSDI questionnaire.
RESULTS:Mean age of cases was 44.05±12.14 years and of control group was 44.45±11.87 indicating comparable baseline characteristics. The mean Schirmer test score was 15.98±10.15 mm in cases and 18.53±10.25mm in controls. The mean TBUT in cases was 6.06±2.07 sec and in the control group was 9.35±4.31 sec (p < 0.001).The presence of staining noticed in 23/60 cases while in controls was 10/60(p <0.001). Mean OSDI score in cases was 23.80±12.49 and 10.44± 4.29 in controls (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION:This study provides clinical evidence regarding the association between hypothyroidism and dry eye disease.
