ABSTRACT
AIM: To assess the association of different risk factors of diabetic retinopathy in type 2 diabetic patients with its severity.
METHODS: A cross- sectional study included 100 cases of type 2 DM with DR. All cases underwent ophthalmic examination and the severity of DR was graded as per the modified ETDRS classification. Factors like age, gender, duration of DM, history of hypertension, glycemic control, HbA1C levels and serum lipid profile were studied for any association with severity of DR.
RESULTS: The mean age of study group was 55.82 ± 9.53 years with 58% females. DR was more severe in females as compared to males (0.04). There was a positive correlation between DR severity and age (<0.003), duration of DM (< 0.001), hypertension (<0.001), HbA1C levels (< 0.001) and LDL level (0.03). CONCLUSION: As per the present study advancing age, high duration of DM, poor glycemic control, hypertension and deranged lipid profile were risk factors for severe DR.
