Purpose:
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the incidence of neovascularistion of iris (NVI), neovascularization of angle (NVA), neovascular glaucoma (NVG), peripheral retinal breaks and anterior hyaloidal fibrovascular proliferation (AHFVP) following prophylactic circumferential anterior retinal cryopexy (ARC) with pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) in proliferative diabetic retinopathy.
Methods:
A prospective, non comparative study of 45 eyes of 36 patients who underwent prophylactic circumferential ARC and primary PPV for tractional / rhegmatogenous retinal detachment & non-resolving vitreous haemorrhage.
Results:
The incidence of NVI, NVA and NVG at 1 year follow-up was 0.11%, 0.027 % and 8.33% respectively. No eyes developed peripheral retinal breaks or AHFVP.
Conclusion:
Prophylactic ARC during primary PPV might be a useful adjunct in reducing the anterior segment neovascularisation and its complications.
